FanimeCon selects the American Red Cross and APA Family Support Services as featured charities
San Jose, CA (May 21st, 2010) - FanimeCon, Northern California's largest anime convention, is pleased to announce the American Red Cross and APA Family Support Services as the featured charities for 2010. The Red Cross will receive all money collected from the FanimeCon 2010 Charity Auction, and the FanimeCon Board will donate a matching amount to APA. In addition, Youth Preparedness volunteers from the Silicon Valley chapter of the American Red Cross will promote their organization and earthquake awareness at the FanimeCon Charity Auction tables in Exhibit Hall 2 of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 29, 2010.
The American Red Cross, Silicon Valley Chapter is a humanitarian organization that helps millions of people each year prevent, prepare for, and cope with emergencies. Due to the events in Haiti, Chile, and China, the organization's theme this year is earthquake awareness. With an estimated 94% of FanimeCon's membership living in earthquake-prone California, the majority of convention attendees can benefit from earthquake preparedness.
APA Family Support Services is a hospital-based agency offering in-home family support services. APA prevents child abuse and domestic violence by helping at-risk families cope with the challenges of raising babies and young children. They work with San Francisco General Hospital and in other sites in the city to provide weekly parent support groups for new mothers with infants. APA also provides bilingual and bicultural home visits to help new parents understand child development, healthy nutrition, and safety.
The FanimeCon Charity Auction receives donations and sells them to the highest bidder in both a silent auction and a live event. In past years, donations included products from FanimeCon vendors, merchandise from anime-related companies, unique art and autographed items from the Guests of Honor, a round of Street Fighter against Reuben Langdon who performs the voice of game character Ken Masters, and a Nintendo Wii containing Miis created by Guests of Honor from two consecutive years of FanimeCon. All money collected by the charity auction is donated to the featured charities. Last year, the FanimeCon Charity Auction raised $3050 for Humane Society Silicon Valley, and the FanimeCon Board matched with another $3050 for APA Family Support Services.
